A Maui anesthesiologist is on trial for attempted murder. The state says Dr. Gerhardt Konig tried to kill his wife Arielle on her 36th birthday while hiking an Oahu cliffside trail. He allegedly pushed her toward a 300-foot drop, struck her head with a rock approximately ten times, and tried to inject her with syringes containing unknown substances. Two hikers witnessed the attack and called 911. Konig fled and was arrested eight hours later after hiding in the brush. He has been in jail without bail for nearly a year. He has pleaded not guilty to second-degree attempted murder and faces life in prison. The defense says this is a "he said, she said" case. They point to two hospital doctors who concluded the injuries were not life-threatening. No syringes were recovered at the scene. The alleged confession to his adult son is, according to the defense, triple hearsay that should never have reached the grand jury.
