This is the tenth video in my series called "Jazz for the Rest of Us." In this series I'll be explaining musical concepts typically associated with jazz music and jazz music theory and showing you how to utilize the concepts in your non-jazz music. In this video we'll be discussing a concept that you might call the Locrian #2 Mode (see paragraph below issues with this name). It can be used when soloing over half diminished chords to achieve a very interesting sound. Note mentioned at 5:00 in the video: As I was editing this video, I came across a blog of a guy that referred to this mode/scale/group of notes note as Locrian sharp 2, but rather as locrian natural two. This is because in the locrian mode, the 2nd degree of the scale is only a half step, or minor second, above the 1st degree of the scale. So the naturally occurring 2nd could be referred to as a flat 2. Thus, when we raise it a half step, we raise it from a flat 2 to a natural 2. So he refers to it as a Locrain natural two. Whereas the name "Locrian #2" implies that we're taking the note that is there and raising it one half step, the name "Locrian Natural 2" implies that we're making the 2nd degree of the scale a major second rather than something else. Both give you the same result. About me: My name is Zack Wing, and as I type these word I've been playing guitar for about 14 years and teaching guitar for about nine. I dabble with other instruments like bass guitar, drums and piano. I also love song writing and composition, recording and production. I have a BS in Music Business that I got solely because it was free.
