Bremen, officially the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, is the smallest and least populous of Germany's 16 states. The state consists of the city of Bremen as well as the small exclave of Bremerhaven in Northern Germany, surrounded by the larger state of Lower Saxony. 2. The Hanseatic League was a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and market towns in Northwestern and Central Europe. At the unwinding of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 the Free Imperial City of Bremen (as of 1646, after earlier privileges of autonomy of 1186) was not mediatised but became a sovereign state officially titled Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. 3. Bremerhaven, literally "Bremen's harbour") is a city at the seaport of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, a state of the Federal Republic of Germany. 4. The German Fairy Tale Route is a tourist attraction in Germany originally established in 1975. With a length of 600 kilometres, the route runs from Hanau in central Germany to Bremen in the north. Tourist attractions along the route are focused around the brothers Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, including locations where they lived and worked at various stages in their life, as well as regions which are linked to the fairy tales found in the Grimm collection, such as The Town Musicians of Bremen. 5. The Roland Statue, which has been standing in the Market Square since 1404, is considered the main symbol of Bremen. According to legend, Roland protects the city from bad luck. 6. The City’s most famous 100-metre-long street, called Böttcherstrasse, has only seven buildings, among which are the houses and fountains of Robinson Crusoe, Atlantis and the Seven Lazy Brothers. 7. In Bremen you can reach for the stars! For the city of Bremen is in fact one of the leading centres for space travel in Europe.
