The U.S. Army entered World War II confident it was ready for modern ground combat. At Kasserine Pass in February 1943, that confidence collapsed. This was the first real ground battle between American forces and the German Army. Inexperience, rigid command structures, and poor coordination turned what was expected to be a learning operation into confusion and retreat. At the time, U.S. forces in North Africa were led by commanders including Lloyd Fredendall under the overall Allied command of Dwight D. Eisenhower. German forces in the region operated under senior commanders such as Erwin Rommel and Hans-Jürgen von Arnim. Rather than a heroic legend, this story looks at Kasserine Pass as it was: a hard failure that exposed serious weaknesses inside the U.S. Army. The defeat triggered immediate changes in leadership, training, and doctrine, including reforms later associated with George S. Patton. Those changes shaped every major American ground operation that followed — from North Africa to Western Europe. Thank you for watching.
