Paragliding is the recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying paragliders: lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure. The pilot sits in a harness or lies supine in a coccoon-like 'speed bag' suspended below a fabric wing.Paragliding, sport of flying parachutes with design modifications that enhance their gliding capabilities. Unlike hang gliders, their close relations, paragliders have no rigid framework; the parachute canopy acts as a wing and is constructed of fabric cells with openings at the front that allow them to be inflated by movement through the air—the “ram-air” effect. The pilot is suspended in a seated harness and controls the wing via lines attached to the trailing edge of the paraglider. These lines may be operated individually to turn the paraglider or simultaneously to influence pitch and speed. Takeoff and landing are on foot and usually occur on a hill or mountain. To launch, the pilot first inflates the wing by pulling it up like a kite and then runs down the hillside until flying speed has been reached. Usually a speed of about 12 miles per hour (19 km per hour) is enough to launch the craft. Indus Paragliding was founded by Sanjay Pendurkar, a former mountaineer and adventure junkie in 2008. A top-notch paragliding school, Indus is nestled high in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra at Kamshet, near Lonavala, just 100km from Mumbai and 50km from Pune.As an Instructor associated with a Paragliding Outfit in Kamshet, Sanjay Pendurkar trained 1000s of student pilots for 10 years, before he decided to go solo. The initial idea was to go back to high mountains and enjoy flying…that did not last much. There were constant requests for teaching paragliding from past students and friends. All of this and huge encouragement and support from some close friends convinced him to start a Paragliding School of his own. Over the last 10 years Indus has trained 3000+ student pilots from India and also from around the globe. Students include members of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Indian Coast Guard etc. A team that started with just 2 members in 2008 now has 8 instructors supported by ground crew and additional support staff. Indus has taken a keen interest in the formation of a National Association for the sport called – Paragliding Association of India (PAI). Indus is proud to be the first member school of PAI and has added 1000s of student pilots as Associate Members over the years. Sanjay Pendurkar and Yogi have earned ‘Competence of Instructor Certification’ from British Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association (BHPA) in 2016 under PAI-BHPA PPPI System. Indus aims to bring the joy of paragliding to anybody and everybody and promotes the simplicity and accessibility of this practical and easy to master aviation sport. Honestly!
