At night of course, night markets. Try the food because you won’t find this anywhere else. Like you can see right in front of you the people are making it I really regret not trying stinky tofu. I think that’s like a symbol of Taiwan. Everyone tries stinky tofu. I mean, I won’t disclose anything, just try it. You will smell it when you arrive in the night market The smell is weird but when you taste it, it’s totally fine 6 FREEDOM & EQUALITY The freedom that you get. In Taiwan I felt very safe. When we were travelling together like two young girls, I felt very safe and the people were very nice. As a solo female traveller in Taiwan, I can’t recall one single situation where I felt unsafe. And that says a lot. As a lesbian, I would say that I felt like safe and accepted and that’s something that I would like to say to the LGBT community. Just go to Taiwan. We just feel so safe, so accepted. Yeah, I think Taiwan is really, on the forefront of well-being of the LGBTQ community. Just equality for everyone. They’re so open-minded. 5 CULTURE & HISTORY When I was in Taiwan I thought it was so interesting that you have so many different cultures. If you look at the history of Taiwan, it was occupied by Japanese, you have the Chinese culture, you have the migration waves from mainland China, Western influence, the Dutch, the Portuguese as well. I really like the temple processions. All the music and colours and atmosphere, that was You have the opportunity to meet aboriginals in some of the upper villages. It’s a surviving culture. The aboriginals in the south have this way to roast pork. It’s really amazing. 4 NATURE Beaches everywhere, you have mountains everywhere. By the way you know you have Taiwan is very famous for butterflies. You can go hiking, or you can just go like to the beach, you can do whatever you want. One of the prettiest places on earth I think. It’s like a little paradise and that’s exactly what the Portuguese called it after, I mean Ilha Formosa. The beautiful island. 3 CONVENIENCE Also Taiwan is very convenient. Everything is convenient. Everything is so easy. You don’t struggle for anything. You have much more transportation. Taxis are very cheap. We are very late here in Europe compared to them. Their technology was very advanced. In Taiwan, things are open so late and it’s indeed very, very convenient. 2 FOOD I think my favourite food that I ate in Taiwan are xiao long bao. Xiao long bao. Soup dumplings. Like, Taiwanese dumplings. I’m really a dumpling lover. I used to eat a lot the Chinese pancake with eggs. Egg pancakes. It’s called dan bing. Beef noodles, the spicy one What is your favourite food, by the way? I think the thing that I miss the most is the hot pots. That’s something that’s very difficult to recreate here in Belgium. Something I would eat a lot is shaved ice. With a lot of fruit on it. As well for the drinks they have this soya milk bubble tea. Zhen zhu nai cha, it’s bubble tea. I think I had bubble tea at least once a day. Yeah that’s what I love about Taiwan, that you can just discover food everywhere. Bubble tea, all the pancakes and all these dumplings. We call it the Taiwan kilos, you know. You get like! Don’t ever go to Taiwan if you want to lose weight. 1 PEOPLE I think what I miss the most is actually the people. Taiwanese people are really like very friendly and genuine. When you go to Taiwan and you see Taiwanese people, you just, you feel warm inside. The way Taiwanese are, when you are lost, when you are trying to understand their cultures, the way they try to simplify your life I think it’s maybe one of the few places in the world where you can have this feeling as a foreigner to feel really welcome by the people there. You don’t feel like a stranger or an outsider. You just feel like home. I think I’m really in love with Taiwanese people. I also agree that Taiwan wouldn’t be Taiwan without its people. I personally heard more than enough reasons today that make me want to go right back to Taiwan right away.
