Daily Kaizen including the Improvement and Coaching Kata. 5 Coaching Questions. Coaching Problem Solving. OPEX Minute # 8 Presented by EMS Consulting Group Inc.: https://www.emsstrategies.com #opexminute #leanmanufacturingmanagement #kaizen #leanmanufacturing #toyotakata #kata Welcome to today’s edition of the OpEx Minute, presented by EMS Consulting Group. Today we will be talking about Daily Kaizen. Kaizen is a Japanese word that translates to “good change” or change for the better. Practicing kaizen is very important to creating a lean culture, and I believe that Mike Rother’s work on the Improvement and Coaching Kata remains the best system for putting daily kaizen into practice. This video will not be covering kaizen events; however, we will cover that topic in a future OPEX Minute. In our model for operational excellence, daily kaizen is one of four key elements. Daily kaizen is a way for each part of an organization to work daily toward its goals. The Improvement and Coaching kata was first written about in Mike Rother's groundbreaking book, Toyota Kata: Managing People for Improvement, Adaptiveness and Superior Results. The improvement kata involves 4 key elements: 1. Understand the direction or challenge. 2. Grasp the Current Condition 3. Establish the Next Target condition 4. Experiment toward the Target Condition. The experimentation will utilize the typical PDCA based problem solving approach. The coaching kata methodology centers around the use of 5 key questions that a coach or mentor would be utilizing with his/her mentee or learner on a daily basis. The questions are: 1. What is the Target Condition? 2. What is the Actual Condition now? 3. What Obstacles do you think are preventing you from reaching the target condition? Which one are you addressing now? 4. What is your Next Step? (next PDCA / experiment) What do you expect? 5. When can we go and see what we have learned from taking that step? Each day, the learner (or person leading the problem solving effort) will take a step by experimenting and documenting what he or she has learned from this. A mentor, usually a direct supervisor, would utilize the 5 questions to coach his student in solving a problem. As this approach is used over and over again, the problem solving method becomes second nature to the student. Eventually, he or she can coach others.
