It's not often that an hour drama is spun off from a sitcom but 'Lou Grant' (1977) did just that, taking the comic character from 'Mary Tyler Moore' and making him the lead of a series that would win 13 Emmys, two of them for star Edward Asner. The world of Mary and Ted was all but forgotten as the show tackled serious issues like mental illness, rape, and pollution. Asner was bitter that he didn't get a sixth season, claiming he was a victim of politics. (Perhaps, but the show did fall out of the top 40 in its final year, ranking lower than 'Mr Merlin'.) The theme is by Patrick Williams ('Streets of San Francisco' and many others). 00:00 Opening titles, season one.
