This time we have chosen to visit Kosovo, partially recognized republic landlocked in the center of the Balkans, bordered by Serbia to the north and east, North Macedonia to the southeast, Albania to the southwest, and Montenegro to the west. Most of central Kosovo sits on the plains of Metohija and the Kosovo field. The Accursed Mountains and Šar Mountains rise in the southwest and southeast, respectively. Kosovo's capital and largest city is Pristina. In a remote, forested spot beyond the village of Mramor, the Bear Sanctuary Pristina is a sanctuary in Kosovo that provides special care to rescued and traumatized brown bears. All privately kept brown bears lived in small cages at restaurants. They were born mostly in the forests of Kosovo or Albania and snatched from their mothers by animal dealers. As restaurant bears they were supposed to attract customers, and thus profit, for their owners. In November 2010, when it became illegal to keep bears privately, there was a need for a national park as a new home for the restaurant bears rescued from captivity. For our first base we have chosen Chalet Kujta in Shtupeq i Madh village, in the middle of mountains and Rugova Canyon in Western Kosovo, in the Albanian Alps, close to the border with Montenegro. Rugova Canyon with a length of 25 km and a depth up to 1,000 meters is considered to be one of Europe's longest and deepest canyons. It was created by water erosion and the retreat of the Peja glacier.
