Where’s My Sweetie Hiding? - Paul Van Loan and His Orchestra, Cameo (Sep. 1, 1924) [36:24] Located at 1600 Broadway, between 48th and 49th streets, the Cinderella Ballroom was one of the most important music venues in New York City during the early 1920s. Most famous for hosting the Wolverine Orchestra during Big Beiderbecke’s brief 1924 New York stay, the ballroom also hosted several well known bands that year. This set of 12 recordings highlights six other bands which headlined at the venue through 1924 (unfortunately I cannot include any Wolverines sides due to copyright). Many of these groups had connections with each other. For instance, the same trombonist and vocalist Dave Harman who sang on the Wolverine’s record of “When My Sugar Walks Down the Street,” recorded his own band for Edison, and included a quote from “Riverboat Shuffle” in the sax soli of his band’s rendition of “Hot-Hot-Hottentot” (at [15:20]). Meanwhile there are rumors that Bix participated in a session with Willie Creager’s Ambassadors during his time at the ballroom. Included are two sides the band cut for Gennett during that time period that were previously mistaken as unissued (I have my own doubts about Bix’s presence but it’s interesting nonetheless!) They also participated in a Vocalion session during the time I have not included here.) Other notable bands include the Georgia Melodians, Ernie Krickett’s New Jersey-based band, Harold Oxley’s band (a Paul Specht unit), and the popular Cameo recording band of Paul Van Loan.
