(2 Jan 2000) Hebrew/Nat Muslim militants have kidnapped and killed a Lebanese soldier following an ambush in northeastern Lebanon. Lebanese troops discovered the soldier's body when they raided a building believed to house a radio station run by the extremist group Jamaa Al-Islamiya. The soldier and his colonel were kidnapped on Friday night after the militants ambushed an army patrol, killing four soldiers and wounding three others. Lebanese army troops raided the two-storey building in northern Lebanon on New Year's Day, twenty-four hours after the kidnap took place. There they discovered the body of the kidnapped soldier, but no sign of the Lebanese colonel abducted alongside him. The two men were captured by the militants on Friday, when their army patrol was ambushed in northern Lebanon, a stronghold of the militant Muslin group, Jamaa Al-Islamiya. Army officers said four other soldiers had died in the attack and three more were injured. The colonel and the soldier were kidnapped not long after the officer reported the incident to his command and asked for reinforcement. The building were the soldier's body was found is believed to house a radio station run by the Jamaa Al-Islamiya who are fighting for the creation of an Islamic state in Lebanon. Lebanese soldiers seized audio equipment and ammunition in the raid. There was no word on the colonel's whereabouts or the identity of either kidnapped men. Dinniyah, a lightly populated mountainous area east of the northern port city of Tripoli, is known to be a haven for Jamaa Al-Islamiya. It was the scene of clashes that started on Friday afternoon between Islamic extremists and Lebanese army troops. Five civilians were wounded on Saturday when mortars hit a home in Assoun, a neighbouring village, and that fighting killed another soldier and wounded two others. Since the trouble began, six soldiers have been killed and five wounded. At least two Jamaa Al-Islamiya militants also have been killed. Reports from Tripoli, 50 miles (80 kilometres) north of the capital, Beirut, said hundreds of families living in nearby villages spent New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in basements and bomb shelters, fearing fighting would escalate.
