The long gestation period, the unique standing delivery, and the complete backing of the herd all contribute to elephants' unique delivery journey. Elephants possess one of the longest gestation periods among all land mammals. On average, it lasts about 22 months, or 640 to 660 days. That is almost two years! During pregnancy, the mother elephant receives tremendous encouragement from the herd. The other female elephants perform an important role in guarding and aiding the expectant mother on her journey. After bearing and protecting its baby for months within its belly, now it’s time for the calf to enter the world. As you can see, the elephants in the herd are already excited to meet the new member of their herd. Once the mother elephant enters parturition, the other herd members gather around her to support her through this difficult moment. Keep watching till the end!
