(15 May 2008) HEADLINE: Parents of tiger attack victim seek compensation --------------------------------------- CAPTION: The parents of a teen who was killed by a tiger at the San Francisco Zoo have filed a wrongful death claim against the city, and are looking for monetary compensation. Carlos Sousa, Jr. died on Christmas Day when a Siberian tiger escaped its enclosure. (May 15) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] The parents of a teen killed by an escaped tiger want the city of San Francisco to pay up. Carlos Sousa, Jr...who was visiting the zoo with 2 of his friends...died on Christmas day when a Siberian tiger escaped its enclosure. The big cat was eventually shot dead by police. But Sousa's parents say if the zoo had proper safety measures in place the tiger and their son would still be alive. The 17 teen year old's family says the zoo knew the animal's enclosure didn't meet height standards. In their claim...they've asked the city to make sure the zoo follows the guidelines set by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. They're also seeking monetary compensation. San Francisco officials have 45 days to respond to the claim...which is a precursor to a lawsuit. Sousa's friends who were injured in the Christmas Day attack are planning to file a lawsuit as early as next week. They've claimed the city was negligent and that the organization that manages the zoo started a smear campaign against them. The city has denied those charges.
