“When an Indigenous woman goes missing, she goes missing twice — first her body vanishes and then her story.” Native American / Indigenous adage In honor of Native American History Month, and as part of our ongoing programming supporting Google’s Indigenous and Aboriginal Network (GAIN), Equity Talks hosts a conversation with four women, each of whom have a connection to the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women (MMIW) movement. More about the conversation partners: Kimberly Loring HeavyRunner has been searching for her sister, Ashley Loring HeavyRunner, since she disappeared in 2017. In her tireless efforts, her heartbreaking journey has become one of the thousands of MMIW stories. Kimberly has spoken at Senate hearings and to multiple news outlets to raise awareness for MMIW and to find her sister. Maria Running Fisher Jones is a lawyer, a Googler, a mother, and a member of the Blackfeet Nation. She is from the same reservation as Kimberly, and she has been leading a working group at Google to raise awareness and funds for MMIW. Cheryl Marriott is a champion for LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and mental health initiatives. She is a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, and a lead for GAIN. She is the head of the MMIW Working Group at Google, leading a group of volunteers to raise awareness within and outside of Google for MMIW. Gloria Steinem is a writer, lecturer, political activist, and feminist organizer. She is particularly interested in the shared origins of sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as roots of violence, non-violent conflict resolution, the cultures of indigenous peoples, and organizing across boundaries for peace and justice. She is currently working on a Center for Organizers in tribute to Wilma Mankiller, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. We are proud to raise awareness of the fight for No More Stolen Sisters. Through Equity Talks, we are continuing to build and expand our conversations to reflect the voices within Google and the world at large. No one team, one community, or individual owns this work and we appreciate the opportunity to shepherd these important conversations with you. The Equity Talks series is a global forum offering an in-depth study of justice through forthright discussion. By amplifying some of the most important voices of our time, our goal is to encourage introspection, conversation, and personal growth.
