Pre Socratic Philosophers 0:00 : The Pre-Socratic philosophers were a group of ancient Greek thinkers who lived before Socrates (c. 470 – 399 BCE). These philosophers laid the groundwork for Western philosophy by exploring fundamental questions about the nature of the universe, the origin of the cosmos, and the underlying principles governing the world. Here are some notable Pre-Socratic philosophers: 0:25 : Thales of Miletus (c. 624 – c. 546 BCE): Thales is often considered the first philosopher in Western history. He believed that water was the fundamental substance from which all things originated, and he sought natural explanations for phenomena that were previously attributed to the gods. 0:43 : Anaximander of Miletus (c. 610 – c. 546 BCE): Anaximander was a student of Thales and one of the earliest philosophers to propose a more abstract principle as the origin of all things. He postulated the concept of the "apeiron" (the boundless or infinite) as the fundamental substance from which everything arises and returns. 1:00 Pythagoras of Samos (c. 570 – c. 495 BCE): Pythagoras was a mathematician and philosopher who founded the Pythagorean school. He believed in the immortality of the soul, the transmigration of souls, and the idea that numbers and mathematical relationships were the foundation of the universe. 1:18 : Heraclitus of Ephesus (c. 535 – c. 475 BCE): Heraclitus is famous for his doctrine of change and the concept of "panta rhei" ("everything flows"). He believed that the universe is in a constant state of flux, and change is the fundamental principle underlying all reality. 1:36 : Parmenides of Elea (c. 515 – c. 450 BCE): Parmenides argued for the existence of a single, eternal, and unchanging reality, which he called "the One." He believed that change and multiplicity were illusions, and the senses could not be trusted in understanding true reality. 1:51 : Empedocles of Acragas (c. 490 – c. 430 BCE): Empedocles proposed that the world is composed of four basic elements: earth, air, fire, and water. He also introduced the idea of "love" and "strife" as the forces that combine and separate these elements. 2:08 : Anaxagoras of Clazomenae (c. 510 – c. 428 BCE): Anaxagoras was an early proponent of cosmology and the concept of "Nous" (mind or intellect) as the organizing principle behind the universe. He suggested that everything is made up of infinitely divisible particles and that the Nous imparts order to these particles. #Presocratics #PreSocraticPhilosophers #AncientHistory #ThePresocratics #JohnGreen #HankGreen #Vlogbrothers #CrashCourse #Education #Thales #Pythagoras #Democritus #HistoryOfScience #Science #ScientificThought #ScientificMethod #PhilosophersBeforeSocrates #PreSocraticPhilosophersThales #PreSocraticPhilosophersForDummies #Philosophy #QuillAndInkHistory #AncientHistory #History #HistoryDocumentary #Documentary #HistoryDocumentaries John Green,Hank Green, vlogbrothers,Crash Course, crashcourse, education, thales, pythagoras, democritus, presocratics, the presocratics, history of science, science, scientific thought, scientific method, pre socratic philosophers, philosophers before socrates, pre socratic philosophers thales, pre socratic philosophers for dummies, philosophy, crash course, ancient history, quill & ink history, hank green, john green, history, history documentary, documentary, history documentaries
