Held on Tuesday, November 4, in Founders Hall, third floor Founder’s Meeting Room. Dr. Sarah Ann Wider, emerita professor of English and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Colgate University, delivered a University Talk titled, "Dialogue’s Poetic Heart: Daisaku Ikeda’s Ethos of Encouragement". Dr. Wider taught a wide range of courses for nearly four decades. A noted Transcendentalism scholar, Dr. Wider is the author of Anna Tilden, Unitarian Culture and the Problem of Self-Representation (1997) and The Critical Reception of Emerson: Unsettling All Things (2001). She has also written essays on women in and responding to the Transcendentalist Movement. Dr. Wider’s talk will explore the poetic and ethical dimensions of SUA founder Daisaku Ikeda’s philosophy of encouragement. Her dialogue with Mr. Ikeda, later published as The Art of True Relations (2014), along with her contributions to Encountering the Poems of Daisaku Ikeda (2015) and Daisaku Ikeda, Transnationalism, and American Literature: Dialogues of the Heart (forthcoming), reflect her lifelong dedication to the transformative power of literature, fostering hope and understanding, and cultivating the poetic spirit through meaningful relationships. We hope you enjoy this special event. It's a wonderful opportunity to deepen our appreciation for how dialogue and authentic connection form the foundation for peace, creativity, and human flourishing. --- Thinking about joining us at Soka University of America?
