Unboxing and First Look: Rollei 35AF by MiNT Camera

The time has finally arrived. Many of us point-and-shoot film users have dreamed about a brand-new 35mm compact camera for decades. When Gary Ho of MiNT Camera told me about his dream of building one a few years ago, I was super excited, because I knew he could do it. Over the years he would show me how the project was progressing, as well as asking for some input on some design and feature choices. I'm happy the camera has finally arrived in my hands at BHT Studios. Please enjoy my unboxing and first look at the Rollei 35AF by MiNT Camera. Unlike the original Rollei 35, the new version has autofocus, which is a huge upgrade from the previous focus by scale. No, the lens isn't collapsible like the original, but who cares when you have autofocus!! Another big difference is the new 35mm f/2.8 lens, which is a departure from the 40mm lens that we're used to seeing on the Rollei 35 (the 35 stood for the film type, not the focal length). Personally, I prefer the 40mm on an SLR or rangefinder, but on a point-and-shoot, the wider the better. This is just my unboxing and first look, so please wait for my full shooting review coming in a couple of weeks. Keep an eye out on my Instagram account for updates on my user experience. Let me know if there's anything you want me to test while I'm out and about. A quick point about the LiDar autofocus system. This AF system is more reliable than what was available on the point-and-shoots from the 1990s, but this camera does not have a default infinity focus mode when shooting through glass or at mirrors. One workaround is when you are focused closer than the minimum 70cm focus distance, the camera automatically defaults to infinity. Again, stay tuned for my shooting review coming soon.
