Tilhill's Chartered Forester Simon Marrington interviews Estate Manager Roy Burrows on the transformation of Summerstone through Tilhill's wooodland creation services. They talk tree species, grants, carbon, wildlife, biodiversity, flood prevention and more in this video interview. About Summerstone: Visit https://summerstoneestate.co.uk Not long ago, the 1,500-acre Summerstone Estate in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire was intensively grazed, with its woodlands left largely unmanaged and almost all the wildlife under threat. Steve and Karen Halsall bought the Estate in January 2015. Keen conservationists, they share an intense interest in wildlife and sustainability. The team at Summerstone, headed up by Estate Manager Roy Burrows, has now transformed this exceptional corner of English countryside. They have sowed acres of wildflowers, reseeded the hay meadows and restored the stunning heather moorlands. With the help of Tilhill's Chartered Foresters they have planted over 65,000 trees which has brought multiple benefits. The mission was to bring a more holistic approach to the agro-ecological land management on the estate, provide the best grass-fed produce and achieve carbon neutral status. They have introduced strategies to encourage wildlife, manage grazing and reinstate woodlands. Today, there are herds of native breed cattle and sheep, including pedigree Belted Galloways, Highland cattle and Swaledale sheep, tree-planting and many other collaborative projects designed to encourage sustainable wildlife.
