I'm still stuck in quarantine with my nose a little stuffy and a toddler on the loose, so for now you're only gonna get content I can throw together during the merciful twenty minute breaks (when I can even manage those). In this case, it's a brandy-themed sequel to some palate-building videos I did for rum ( • Building a Rum Palate in Four Bottles ) and then for Scotch malts ( • Building a Scotch Malt Palate in Five Bott... ). The idea here is to help newcomers who've already been through the basics of brandy (say, Henny at a few parties plus a bottle of Marie Duffau Napoleon) acquaint themselves with a broader set of profiles - nothing exhaustive, just enough to give them a broad base to start from. For now we're also limiting the brandies in question to the grape-based stuff (Calvas and the rest can come another time). And just to make things harder, I'm additionally keeping it to bottles generally available in the US and also bottled above the 40% minimum (which is difficult). But basically it's all gonna come down to 1) something American and, ideally, cheap, 2) an Armagnac, 3) a grower Cognac, 4) a pomace brandy, and 5) something unaged. Relevant links include the BIB brandies video ( • Let's Try Bottled-in-Bond Brandies: Christ... ), a pair of Bas-Armagnac videos ( • Bas-Armagnac Roundup: Tariquet 8yo v. Osmi... , • More Yak: Marcel Trepout 1991, "Le Basque"... ), the second Intro to Cognac video ( • Intro to Cognac Part 2, 42% and Up: Jean F... ), a marc video ( • Intro to Marc 2: Cordelier, Metté, Dumangi... ), and a pisco video ( • A Peruvian Pisco Pageant: Barsol Acholado ... ). Oh, and if you're wondering, that word is "Dartigalongue."
