Commander Hale dragged himself from the wreckage of his shuttle. It's Half-frozen metal, sparking cables and cockpit are crumpled like paper. His suit warned him his body temperature was dropping, but at least he was alive…and luckily his survey rover had survived too. After gathering his thoughts, he sent the rover ahead to search for signs of life, its beacon pulsing through the whiteout until it slowly disappeared in the distance. Hale followed the tracks in the snow the rover left across the endless blanket of snow. Hours passed. The sky dimmed. The wind howled like something ancient. Then, silence again. The rover had stopped far up ahead. As Hale reached the mouth of a valley, breathing hard, he saw it. A white structure raised from the frozen plain like it had been carved out of ice. Perfect geometry. Smooth as obsidian. And down its centre ran a single line of blazing orange light, beginning at the pinnacle and ending at the base, where it pulsed with a brighter, almost living glow. Not natural. Not human. He felt the warmth of the light even from hundreds of meters away. “Who put you here?” Hale whispered into his helmet, his breath fogging the glass. His visor sensors registered energy signatures far beyond anything he'd ever witnessed before. He took one step closer. The light responded, glowing brighter, humming softly, as though acknowledging him. The orange line widened, opening like an eye slowly waking. And for the first time since the crash, Hale didn’t feel cold anymore...
