(6 Aug 1997) Natural Sound Israeli soldiers arrested some 20 Palestinians on Tuesday night in the West Bank city of Hebron. The arrests are part of Israel's crackdown on Islamic militants, spurred by last week's attack on a Jerusalem market in which 13 people were killed along with the two suicide bombers. More arrests of Palestinians by Israeli forces as Israel continues its crackdown on alleged Islamic militants. The crackdown follows last Wednesday's market attack in which two suicide bombers detonated deadly briefcases, killing themselves and 13 civilians. Following the attack, Israel suspended peace talks with the Palestinians, clamped a travel ban on the West Bank and Gaza and halted the transfer of tax revenues to the self-rule government. Early on Wednesday, the Israeli army arrested 20 Palestinians suspected of "terrorist activity" in the West Bank. Since the attack, 176 Palestinians have been arrested by Israel. The Israeli measures drew harsh criticism from the 22-nation Arab League in Cairo on Tuesday. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat described the Israeli crackdown as "a criminal measure." But Israel is determined to strike at the heart of militant organisations in the hope that tragedies like last week's in Jerusalem are not repeated.
