River terns, a bird belonging to the 'gulls' class, come to India as winter visitors. In Hindi it is called 'Jal-Kurri' जल-कुररी and in Marathi it is called 'Nadi-Suraya' नदी सुरय These birds belong to the subfamily 'Sternidae' of the family 'Laridae' of the order 'Charadriiformes'. These birds are mostly found in freshwater wetlands, rarely in tidal bays. Males and females look alike. They glide over the water and pair up while flying in the air. The male feeds the female. They dive and catch and eat fish, small crabs, shrimp, tadpoles, and aquatic creatures in rivers and lakes. They hover over the water, usually 20-25 feet away, before catching their prey, and when they spot a fish, they dive into the water and catch it. They glide over the water and pair up while flying in the air. The male feeds the female. These birds breed in areas such as riverbanks and lakes between March and May. They often nest in the open or in the sand. Their numbers are declining in India due to pollution in rivers. Due to increasing human interference and construction projects, human disturbance in sandy areas has adversely affected their reproductive process and ability, resulting in a rapid decline in their numbers. #learnabotbirds #shortsfeed #wildlife #birdslover #birdsofindia #indianbirds #birdwatching #birdsfrom_karadarea #birdsphotography #birdsofinstagram #birdcalls #soundofbirds #birdbehavior #ournature #savenature
