St Paul's Cathedral CHALLENGE. 528 Steps 🪜 to Stone & Golden Gallery

The Dome of St. Pauls Cathedral is one of its most iconic features and a masterpiece of architectural design. We made the 528 steps climb to both the Stone and Golden Gallery. The current dome is actually the cathedral's fourth dome. It was designed by the renowned architect Sir Christopher Wren in the late 17th century after the previous dome was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Wren's design was influenced by both classical and baroque architectural styles. Construction began in 1675 and was completed in 1711. The dome has a distinctive shape, with an outer dome and an inner dome. The outer dome is made of lead and has a height of approximately 85 meters (280 feet) from ground level. It is supported by a brick cone structure beneath it. The inner dome, visible from the cathedral's interior, is made of wood and is purely decorative. The total weight of the dome and its supporting structure is estimated to be around 65,000 tons. The Whispering Gallery is closed to the public after a death in 2019. There are two additional galleries: the Stone Gallery and the Golden Gallery. The Stone Gallery is an outdoor walkway encircling the exterior of the dome, while the Golden Gallery is the highest and smallest of the three, offering spectacular views of London. At the top of the outer dome, there is a gilded cross, which is a prominent Christian symbol. The cross itself measures about 7.5 meters (24.6 feet) in height.
