The subjugation of the maritime provinces by the Portuguese in the latter part of the 17th century and consequent loss of royal patronage, dealt a severe blow to Buddhism in Sri Lanka. As one proceed along Wijerama Avenue at the Wijerama junction this temple can be approached. Its inception runs down to the Kotte era. It had been built with the state patronage during the tenure of King Parakramabahu the 6th (1412 - 1467) of Kotte. But this temple had stood no chance against the Portuguese invasion (1582), unfortunately. It was evident by the relics of burnt, blackened, demolished stone columns and stone slabs that lie all over the temple premises. As a result many places of worship were neglected. Wijayarama Raja Maha Viharaya seems to have fallen on especially hard times, was abandoned and covered by a dense thicket. On the 22nd of December 2023, a significant ceremony took place at the Gangodawila Vijerama Sri Wijerama Maha Viharaya, under the patronage of the Most Venerable Rajamaha Viharaya, marking the initiation of the Devol madu Shanthikarma known as bless to sri lanka. We extend our heartfelt congratulations on this auspicious occasion. this ‘Gammadu Shanthi Karma’ one of the ancient traditional art forms and a ritual in Sri Lanka. Paliya for dummala, the resin that flares up when lit. Its a strong heavy smell. Morning Watch Dances in Southern Sri Lanka feature Pandem Sanniya/Paliya, an authentic healing Tovil Dance. Skilled practitioners conduct traditional rituals to expel specific demons causing patients' issues. Beginning around 3 am and concluding at sunrise, these dances are believed to force demons back to their abodes. Although 18 disease-causing demons exist, usually only 7 or 8 participate, with the final one wearing a mask depicting all. The appearances follow a standard format, signaled by a special drumbeat summoning demons from their palace. Pandem Sanniya/Paliya, representing death, leads the dance wearing an enormous lion mane mask. Often, as seen in a short video, he appears in duplicate. While Pandem Sanniya/Paliya dances, other demons engage in comic exchanges with the drummer, amusing the audience. Loud drumming and noises precede their appearance, accompanied by the violent shaking of the Demon Palace. Holding burning torches, they burst out, throwing dummala powder, creating flames. Pandem Sanniya/Paliya dances around, pausing in threatening poses and waving torches over the patient's head before retreating into the Demon Palace. These healing ceremonies are extensive and costly, involving entire families and sometimes neighbors, lasting all night. Skilled practitioners take precautions, including cross-dressing, to confuse dangerous demons. Devol-deviyo Devol-deviyo is perhaps the most feared of the twelve Deities and attributed with inflicting the most punitive of punishments. His main shrine is at Seenigama just North of Hikkaduwa although there are shrines to him all over Sri Lanka. Like the majority of the Deities he originates from Southern India. Some legends associated with him are enacted and sung by the Tovil dancers during Pattini and exorcism ceremonies (see sections on Pattini and Tovil Ceremonies). Dohala stepped forward and announced that so skilful a man should be honoured and invited him to join them as a Deity. He would then have a place in their ceremonies, (the gam-madua, the pam-madua, the devol-madua, etc.) Whenever one of these ceremonies was to be performed, he should be present and have his share of the offerings. Andun-Kurumbara, Sandun-Kurumbara, Puspa-Kurumbara, Vata-Kurumbara, Kalu-Kurumbara, Tota-Kurumbara, and Gini-Kurumbiira. These legends about Devol-diviyo are enacted and sung at the Pattini Ceremonies and the part of the legend where he arrives at Seenigama from the ship wreck and has to “eat” and trample the enormous fires to gain entry, is enacted in the Fire Walking/Trampling parts of the the Ceremony - Gini- Pagima (see section on this part of the ceremony in Pattini Ceremonies section). #ginisisila #ගම්මඩුව #දේව_පූජාව #Gammaduwa #SriLanka #SriLankaTraditionalDance #Dance #Dancing #Gammadu #Gammaduwa #Madu #culture #SLtourism #tourismSL #visitSL #danceforgod #blessing Anguru Dummala Paliya sri lankan traditional dance Authentic Healing Tovil gini sisila #gini fire dance, gini sisila narthanaya Dewol Madu Shanthi Karmaya Gini Kurumbara Dance Twelve Deities
