NanoEx is a hands-on, minds-on, career-creating opportunity! Learn cool, real-world nanoscience and technology. Build important relationships. Uncover your own strengths and potential in the workforce. Develop key job skills. Have fun doing it! In Nano@Work students will study specific nanoscale science and technology (NS&T) applications and the associated jobs in local businesses. Businesses provide a mentor and job shadowing opportunities so students can learn what a day is like for someone in manufacturing or research; the sorts of tasks required in the work environment; and the required skills, knowledge, and dispositions. During the NanoSymposium, students present their final projects to peers, parents, scientists, businesses, and the general public through live, in-person and web-based formats. Students use business specific examples and applications to address the two essential questions—(1) How are specialized tools and techniques used to characterize and measure properties of objects, their structure and surfaces, even if the objects cannot be seen?, and (2) Who is a nanotechnician?—and discuss how they will use what they have learned in their future endeavors. NanoExperiences: Pathways to Workforce Success is a National Science Foundation funded iTEST strategies project designed to support high school students in multiple science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) career pathways related to nanoscale science and technology (NS&T).
