The New Zealand Dabchick, also called Weiwea, New Zealand Grebe, or Little Grebe, is a small, endemic diving bird primarily inhabiting the North Island’s freshwater lakes, farm dams, and ponds. These aquatic specialists favour shallow waters with dense vegetation for nesting and security. Their diet consists mainly of aquatic invertebrates and larvae, though they also dive to catch small fish, freshwater crayfish (koura), and snails. Growing to 29 cm, they are expert divers that build floating nests anchored to reeds, which are unfortunately vulnerable to boat wash. The video was made on the 25 January 2026 at Lake Roromahaha, at the bottom of the Waimangu valley. It shows the New Zealand dabchick diving for food. Check out how long it can stay under water and where it reappears :-) #newzealanddabchick #dabchick #newzealandgrebe #littlegrebe #grebe #divingbird #endemic #endemicbirds #rotorua #lakerotomahana #waimanguvalley #nzbirds #newzealandbirds #birds #newzealand #hiking #nzhiking #tramping #nztramping
