In other words some techniques that will compliment the basic ‘La Pompe’ swing style when playing rhythm. In this video I’ll show you two techniques that you can use right away to make your gypsy rhythm playing more interesting and dynamic. 1. Rhythmic Stabs - These accents work a treat to break up the basic ‘La Pompe’ and add tension and groove to your rhythm playing. Make these stabs (accents) short, sharp and crisp and they will sound awesome. Play the chord twice per bar, with two percussive slaps in between. This is also a groovy backing you can use when the bass player takes a solo. You can also try this technique with two guitars, which creates a cool stereo effect that sounds great. 2. Playing Open - Instead of a constant four to the bar ‘La Pompe’ swing rhythm, this technique of playing open will add space and air to your rhythm sound. This gives the soloist the opportunity to play in a more soulful way and adds welcome space to the musical sound scope. Both of these techniques will sound awesome and break up the monotony of the typical gypsy jazz driving rhythm. It’s important to remember not to use them too much. One or two choruses played using either of these techniques is about right and will enhance the ‘La Pompe’ sound when you go back to regular swing. PRO TIPS: Tap your foot. - You must keep your body in time when playing gypsy rhythm guitar - period. This is especially true when using the two techniques in this lesson. Practice both these techniques on just one chord slowly before trying them through a full set of changes. Have fun!
