Since 2011, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department has focused on stream restoration for trout habitat and stream (or river) improvement, known as strategic wood additions. Strategic wood addition, or the calculated placement of large, felled trees at specific stream locations, can improve trout habitat and restore stream function. As of this posting, the department has improved trout habitat and stream function in over 27 miles of stream in northeastern Vermont. This work has been conducted by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and Trout Unlimited on lands owned by Weyerhaeuser, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Vermont Fish and Wildlife. Funding has been provided by a variety of sources including: Sportfish Restoration, VT fishing license sales, New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture, and Ecosystem Restoration Funds through the Vermont Clean Water Initiative Program.
