#camas #earthoven #oldways June 2022 was the first time in 100 years we are told Camas has been baked in a traditional earth oven in the Klamath, Modoc and Yohooskin homelands. Collectively we gleaned as much as we possibly could from different elders and knowledge carriers who helped in this beautiful process of cultural restoration here within the Klamath Basin. A great collaboration between the Riddle family and Walking with Western Wildflowers and many others who put in time and energy. When this process was happening we didn't know if our rocks were hot enough before covered with clay or if there was enough moisture in the oven, whether or not we had enough grass and if we had enough dirt over top of the camas and if our wood was burning too hot! a great mystery revealed itself when we pulled that beautiful camas candy caramelized perfectly from the earth oven. it was a great success and the first of many to come. As we all got to enjoy our fill fresh from the oven, the rest of the cooked camas has been mashed and dried to sweet cakes and are being dispersed amongst the native communities that have not yet tasted and experienced the magic of this traditional food cooked in its traditional way. we hope to see more participants in the coming camas bakes.
