This can lead to various symptoms, including difficulty breathing through one nostril, recurrent sinus infections, and snoring. Treatment options may include medications, nasal sprays, or in severe cases, surgery to correct the deviation. If you have concerns about a deviated septum, it's best to consult with an ear, nose, and throat specialist (otolaryngologist) for an evaluation and appropriate management. Nasal Septum: The thin wall of cartilage and bone that divides the nose into two nasal passages. Deviation: Refers to the displacement or shifting of the nasal septum from its normal position. Symptoms: Common symptoms include nasal congestion, difficulty breathing through one nostril, recurrent sinus infections, snoring, and nosebleeds. Causes: Deviated septums can result from congenital factors (present at birth) or develop due to injury or trauma to the nose. Diagnosis: Usually diagnosed through a physical examination by an ear, nose, and throat specialist (otolaryngologist) or imaging studies like a CT scan or nasal endoscopy. Treatment: Treatment options may include medications (decongestants or antihistamines), nasal sprays, or surgical procedures like septoplasty or rhinoplasty to correct the deviation. Septoplasty: A surgical procedure to straighten or reposition the deviated septum to improve airflow. Rhinoplasty: A cosmetic surgery that may be combined with septoplasty to enhance the appearance of the nose. Complications: Untreated or severe cases of deviated septum can lead to chronic sinus problems, sleep disturbances, or exacerbate other respiratory conditions. Consultation: If you suspect you have a deviated nasal septum or are experiencing related symptoms, it's essential to consult with a medical professional for proper evaluation and guidance.
