Wasna is a Očeti Šakowin staple food consisting of some combination of dried meat, dried corn, dried berries, nuts, roots, and fat. The possibilities of these combinations are practically endless, but one of the most well known variations consists of buffalo meat, chokecherries, and kidney fat. Because wasna doesn’t spoil and is easily transported, Dakotas and Lakotas will pack wasna for long road trips, hiking, hunting excursions, but they’ll often eat this as a simple snack. Wasna is also an important ceremonial food. This type of dish is actually enjoyed in various forms by Indigenous people all over the world, with the Anishinaabe, for example, referring to it as pemmican. According to the Great Plains Tribal Leaders Health Board, “Wasna is a very good source of protein and the Lakota value this traditional recipe not only as a food but also as a healing instrument. It also has less cholesterol, yet a mere four ounces provides more protein than half a dozen eggs. Wasna, because of the protein it contains, can raise a person’s iron level within 15 minutes.
