March is “in like a Lion” here in New England - and while I'm chomping at the bit for spring, here is some wholesome proggy jazz-metal fusion to a super-cut of the 2022 haying season. (Because, you know, some kids just have different interests 😁) Artist: Intronaut Song: “Milk Leg” 2022 saw a total of 5624 bales, amidst yet another challenging season, with all of the (New England) dryness. That makes 4 out of the last 5 years with some sort of extreme dry or extreme wet…. First cut went swimmingly, with all of the amazing weather to dry it - though the later fields started to turn overripe at lightning speed as July approached, it then it became clear that second cut regrowth was suffering. Second cut started around half yield, and dropped precipitously from there. By the last fields, we were averaging 10 bales per acre (~20%). Covering 53 acres was still a record for me, even if the low yields meant being a far cry from the 7000 hoped bales. The new Vermeer TM610 hay mower made all the difference in efficiently covering that ground (I think I may have gone off the deep end if I had tried to keep up with the old 5 footer…) They can’t all be zingers…. But 2022 had its highlights, and it's nice to look back on. (We are a 50-acre haying operation in Conway, MA - making all small square bales for the local food, fiber, and livestock community.
