If you don't have pigweed on your farm, now is the perfect time to proactively prevent it and the development of pigweed resistance. Taking action is critical because pigweed can spread rapidly; a single female pigweed plant can produce hundreds of thousands of seeds, leading to exponential growth in your fields. Even with a 99% weed control program, you could still end up with 360 surviving plants, resulting in 65,000 plants the following year, 12 million the next, and a staggering 2 billion in the year after that. This can devastate your fields, requiring significant time and money to salvage any crops. A study by the University of Arkansas demonstrated the spatial spread of Palmer amaranth.. Planting 20,000 seeds in a three-foot by three-foot area, they observed its rapid expansion. Within two years, it had infested over 20% of the field, reaching 95 to 100% by the third year, leading to complete crop loss. If you are currently pigweed-free, maintain that status through OWE’s practices and eradication mindset. For those already experiencing pigweed escapes, take immediate measures to prevent further spread.
