Can collector with bags full of cans at Copacabana Beach STORYLINE: Every Monday morning, at the famous Copacabana beach in Brazil, groups of freelance refuse collectors gather to retrieve cans left by beach goers over the weekend. The activity is so widespread that Brazil is now a world leader in recycling cans, with 87% of locally produced cans being made from recycled ones. Recycling does not only increase environmental awareness, but it has also helped more than 150 thousand poor families in the country to survive. Can collectors get a receipt which can be exchanged for rice and beans. One kilogram (2.2 pounds) of cans can be exchanged for the same amount of rice or beans. In the city of Rio de Janeiro alone, there are 130 recycling facilities where people can take cans and plastic bottles to be recycled.
