A presentation from the 2025 National Speleological Society Southwest Region Winter Technical Meeting, held December 6th, 2025 at the University of New Mexico. https://swr.caves.org/ https://caves.org/ Published with permission from the authors and presenters. Wild and Wonderful: The Microbiology of the Caves of Great Basin National Park and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Nevada University of New Mexico Biology Department Jennifer Hathaway Joe Medley Ryan Ozatalar Elizabeth Walker Mike Spilde Diana Northup Abstract: As part of the Wild Cave Project for Great Basin National Park and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the Northup Lab did microbial surveys of 10 caves in the area. The mostly hypogean caves in the area house unique and breathtaking cave formations. Over a two-year period, samples were collected for DNA and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The SEM showed a wide variety of mineral features, and several samples had few signs of microbial life. The DNA analysis showed some surprising results. There were several samples rich in salt-loving bacteria. Many had a large number of unknown or newly identified organisms. Further studies of the samples will include more in-depth sequencing in hopes of gaining better understanding of microbial life in the Great Basin Caves.
