These sites tell the story of prehistoric life, Native American culture, and the pioneers who braved the Oregon Trail. Traveling in our RV with our dog Pete, we had each site almost to ourselves in December! =============================== ⬇️ Visitor Guide ⬇️ 🔹 Agate Fossil Beds National Monument Famous for its well-preserved Miocene-era fossils, including ancient mammals like beardogs and rhinoceros relatives. Don’t miss the Daemonelix Trail, where you’ll see the famous “Devil’s Corkscrews,” spiral-shaped burrows left behind by extinct beavers. Inside the visitor center, you’ll find Native American artifacts collected by rancher James Cook, including gifts from Lakota Chief Red Cloud. 🔹 Scott’s Bluff National Monument A towering landmark along the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails, guiding pioneers heading west in the 1800s. Drive your RV through the three historic tunnels to reach the summit—make sure you know your rig’s height (11 ft clearance). The top offers panoramic views of the North Platte River Valley. Fun Fact: More than 250,000 emigrants passed Scott’s Bluff between 1843 and 1869. 🔹 Chimney Rock National Historic Site Perhaps the most iconic landmark on the Oregon Trail, mentioned in more emigrant diaries than any other feature. Rising nearly 480 feet above the surrounding plains, its spire was a beacon of progress for travelers. Today, the visitor center offers exhibits on westward expansion and the challenges pioneers faced. =============================== ⚠️ Travel Tips RV Tip: Check your height before driving through Scott’s Bluff tunnels—rangers will confirm. Best Time to Visit: Winter brings solitude but cold temps. Summer is busier, with more ranger programs. Bring Layers: Plains weather changes quickly, even in December.
