Frost Flute Ensemble University of Miami, Frost School of Music M. Gusman Concert Hall - January 24, 2017 "Richard Strauss’ opera “Der Rosenkavalier” is not only one of the greatest works ever written, it also features an exquisitely gorgeous trio at the end of the opera. Very briefly: The opera begins with the Marschallin in bed with her very young lover, Octavian (played by a mezzo-soprano, a device no doubt borrowed from Mozart). She is convinced that the day will come when he will leave her for a younger woman. There is much intrigue for most of the rest of the opera, climaxing in the final scene. Here the Marschallin realizes that the time has come for Octavian to go. She releases her young lover to Sophie and the three women sing some of the most glorious music ever written. The Marschallin leaves and Octavian and Sophie sing a beautiful duet about their love which you will also hear. The opera ends with a light moment reminiscent of Till Eulenspiegel. I wrote this flute quartet to be played at my marriage to Ed Freedman as I could not think of anything more befitting a happy, loving event." -Trudy Kane
