Wide of the church were Puglisi served as a priest STORYLINE: On Saturday the Catholic Church celebrated the beatification of Don Giuseppe Puglisi, a Sicilian priest who was killed by the Mafia in 1993. Puglisi was shot dead by a gunman in front of his house in the Brancaccio district of Palermo on September 15, 1993. He was known for preaching against organised crime. Puglisi was murdered on the day of his 56th birthday, a few months after Pope John Paul II, during a visit to Sicily, urged priests to rally the faithful against organised crime. Six people were sentenced to life imprisonment for the priest's murder. More than 50,000 pilgrims attended the beatification ceremony on Saturday in Palermo. Beatification is the last formal step in the Catholic church's process towards possible sainthood. Giuseppe Puglisi, better known as Don Pino Puglisi, is the first Mafia victim to be honoured as a martyr by the Catholic Church. He dedicated his life to convincing youth to rise up against the Mafia bosses in Palermo and he directly challenged the Mafia's political influence in Sicily. He served as pastor in Brancaccio, a heavily mobster-infested poor neighbourhood controlled by powerful Mafia families of Palermo. Puglisi urged young people, often jobless and easily recruited by the Mafia, to turn their backs on crime. In July 1991, he created the 'Centro Padre Nostro - refuge for people in need', based at his house, where he organised marches against mafia and gave young people an anti-mafia education. The centre is still there. In his homily at the beatification Palermo Cardinal Paolo Romeo said Mafiosi often claim to be religious but actually cause hatred, violence and death.
