I needed to build compost for next year starting now and control weeds. Leaf bags are the perfect solution. Their PH of 4 helps them tamp down weeds. As they break down PH rises to neutral. By the time I need to top off my raised beds, a foot thick of leaves will give me about 4-5 inches of compost to use in the beds right next to the composting walkways. I took leaves about a foot thick and mixed chicken manure and green grass clippings into them. In one area where I am growing asparagus, I also mixed in a very small amount of ash. This takes the pH up a little as asparagus prefer neutral. Potatoes and blueberries though love acidic soil. Blueberries prefer a pH of around 4 and potatoes around 5 so they are happy mulched with leaves. When I get pine bark and needles, I put those directly on the blueberries as they stay acidic the longest.
