The Gramophone Company was remarkably enterprising in its early days, with several of its recording experts touring various parts of the world with a view to recording local talent. December 1901 saw expert William Sinkler Darby in Vienna, where he recorded several sides by the renowned Carl Ziehrer Orchestra. Carl Michael Ziehrer (1843-1922) was one of the chief rivals of Johann Strauss II, both as a composer and as a conductor. As a composer, his output was certainly greater, albeit not as popular as a whole. As a conductor, he led various dance orchestras and civilian and military bands from the time he was 20. In the 1890s, he formed his largest and most popular dance orchestra, and it was this orchestra - no doubt reduced in numbers - that Darby recorded. Regrettably, the sound quality is primitive, and the disc transferred here is in far from pristine condition. On the other hand, I have never seen another Ziehrer record, and I feel this one is worth preserving.
