19th Century Counterpoint & Matteo Carcassi’s Study Op. 60 #7 Matteo Carcassi’s Etude Op 60 #7 in A minor is one of his most popular short works. Born five years after Mozart’s passing, Carcassi’s first published works place him in the late classical and early romantic period. This piece is a technically and musically challenging work. Carcassi skillful use of two and three voice counterpoint presents musical challenges for the performer. Additionally, Carcassi uses 1/16-note tremolo (a-m-i) in the upper melody on the top treble strings to create a more sustaining upper melody. Short Biography Matteo Carcassi was born in Florence in 1796 and was the eldest of ten children. In 1816 he settled in Paris, and published his first works. According to the Journal des Débats (1-20-1853) “[il] avait fait de la France, qu’il avait servie comme soldat, sa patrie adoptive et de prédilection.” (“He had made of France, which he had served as a soldier, his adopted and favourite country”) At about the same time he began publishing, and altogether he published at least 77 opus numbers. His Twenty-Five etudes op. 60 were published in the same year as his Méthode complète pour la Guitare, op. 59, first published in Paris in 1836. He died in Paris on 16 January 1853.
