KHS delivers new canning line to Coca-Cola in Karlsruhe

A fizzing Coca-Cola drunk out of the can is for many the absolute epitome of the carbonated soft drink. Indeed, the demand for beverages in cans has continuously grown over the past few years. No wonder, really: cans are not only easy to hold but also demonstrate environmental properties which are greatly improved compared to their predecessors. They now greatly save on materials during their manufacture and have a very high recycling rate of almost 100%. The increased demand for this type of receptacle recently prompted Coca-Cola European Partners to commission a new canning line from KHS for its facilities in Karlsruhe, Germany, with a capacity of up to 120,000 cans per hour. The new equipment in question comprises a turnkey canning line which takes the specific requirements of the world’s biggest beverage producer into account. Three sizes of can holding 0.25, 0.33 and 0.5 liters of numerous different beverages from the entire product portfolio are filled on the new setup. All of the systems and machines involved in the process are precisely coordinated with one another and provide great flexibility in their application. The new plant engineering also includes many potential saving options. For example, the water from the empty can rinser is collected and reused for the pasteurizer if and when required. The gas heating system reduces energy costs by up to 75% compared to the conventional electrically-operated heater and cuts CO2 emissions by a maximum of 60%. The line also boasts many different packaging and palletizing options.
