中国通史 - 六朝 (220–589 AD) Six Dynasties (六朝 220-589 AD) is a collective term for six Han-ruled regimes in China during the periods of the later phase of Three Kingdoms era (220–280 AD), the Jin dynasty (265–420 AD), and the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420–589 AD). It also coincides with the era of the Sixteen Kingdoms (304–439), a chaotic warring period in northern China after the collapse of the Western Jin dynasty. The six dynasties were: Eastern Wu (222–280 AD) Eastern Jin dynasty (317–420 AD) Liu Song dynasty (420–479 AD) Southern Qi dynasty (479–502 AD) Liang dynasty (502–557 AD) Chen dynasty (557–589 AD) This listing is based on the states that maintained national capitals at Jiankang (contemporary Nanjing). The Six Dynasties period was an important time in the history of Chinese poetry, especially remarkable for its frank descriptions of love and beauty. Especially important is the anthology New Songs from the Jade Terrace, compiled by Xu Ling, under the patronage of Crown Prince Xiao Gang (later Emperor Jian Wen) of the Liang Dynasty. Also significant, is the Zi Ye, or "Lady Midnight" style of the Jin dynasty. This was the first time in Chinese history that the political center of China was located in the south, with surge in population and continual development of economy and culture. This transformed southern China from being remote territories to an economic center that could rival the north from the Tang Dynasty onward.
