But many, if not most of these genomes have not been sequenced by scientists, leaving us in the dark about the molecular basis behind the behaviour, survival traits and physiology of many species. Until 2018, the Great White Shark was one of these mystery species. In this video, I will walk you through the process of how the Great White Shark’s genome was sequenced, how this process elucidated the infamous predator’s superior wound healing and cancer resistance, and the potential advantages conferred by the results for genetics, zoology, and biomedicine. I will also clarify how this was an advance on previous studies of shark genomes and physiology, briefly describe a genome sequencing that is saving a species (the Tasmanian Devil) from extinction and hopefully entertain you with some music that I composed and performed myself.
