Have you ever imagined what life would be like without countries and borders? Perhaps freer, perhaps chaotic. Countries, nations and States do exist, and so do borders. However, there are people who belong to none of them, people who, in the event of armed conflict, would not be protected by any law, who could not sue if they suffered harm, and who could remain in prison indefinitely because “it’s as if they didn’t exist.” These people are considered Stateless, without a homeland. Being Stateless is not about despising one’s homeland as the word in Spanish suggest (Apátrida), but about lacking one. Statelessness is a topic of research that has gained increasing prominence in countries that recognize nationality in an exclusive manner, ius sanguinis or ius soli. In Latin America, Constitutional grounds are not like that, even though there are Stateless people or people at risk of Statelessness for other reasons, people without the assignment/recognition of an identity that only the State can legitimately provide. This is the research topic we're addressing at our 31st outreach conference, where we're joined by Dr. Violeta Chávez from CIICS AC and Molecular Biologist Julián Grandvallet Contreras who conducts the interview and lead us deeper in the main topic. We invite you to watch the full interview in all our social media nets and to share any comment or question for Violeta.
