For many years we assumed that the posterior portion of the heart was aligned with the posterior portion of the thoracic cavity. There really wasn't any good reason to assume this except that it just seemed "reasonable." New research using MRIs performed on living patients has set the record straight. It is the LEFT LATERAL border of the heart that actually faces posteriorly and the electrodes for leads V7 - V9 are simply recording what is happening to the surface of the heart that lies directly beneath them - and that surface happens to be the lateral surface of the left ventricle. This video also demonstrates that the interventricular septum is actually almost parallel to the frontal plane - not perpendicular to it. If you would like to learn more about interpreting 12-lead ECGs at an advanced level, please visit our website at https://www.medicusofhouston.com. We at Medicus of Houston are known the world over for our quality of instruction, the advanced level of the material presented (we don't simply rehash the basic concepts as many "advanced" courses do), the limited class size, the active participation of all participants in the interpretation of complex ECGs during the class while being guided and prompted by an expert electrocardiographer and the ability for each participant to ask questions at any time. AMA PRA Category 1 Credit is awarded. Participants come to Houston, Texas from all over North and South America, Europe, Australasia and the Middle East to spend four intense days studying under the tutelage of Jerry W. Jones, MD FACEP FAAEM.
