Hello everyone welcome to another edition of 1+1 your place for inconvenient truthtelling and mythbusting. on today’s program we’re rejoined by Tyler Shiplely. Tyler is a historian, with a critical leftist perspective, part of what I call Canada’s truthtelling/mythbusting movement which includes people like Yves Engler, Dimiti Lascaris, Richard Sanders, The Canada Files various others old and new that spend time exposing Canada’s blood imperial past, its ongoing pro-corporate, pro- Anglo-American/Pan-European hegemony and linking it to the ongoing struggles for justice for Indigenous folk and exposing the severe limitations to liberal democracy. He is as I mentioned a historian but his official title is Professor of Society, Culture and Commerce in the Department of Liberal Studies at Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning And Tyler is the author of “Ottawa and Empire: Canada and the Military Coup in Honduras” and “Canada In The World: Settler Capitalism and the Colonial Imagination”. My first question that I ask Tyler is what should be the left's response to a growing far-right movement given some on the left mostly white male cisgender left think we need to completely abandon identity politics and there has been some leftists who've been playing footsy and even pivoting to the far-right. But since today is its International Holocaust Remembrance Day much of the hour was spent talking about Canada's real role both during the Spanish Civil War, tolerance and even support for fascist/Nazi movements in Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and even Japan. We discuss and dissect the hideous anti-Semitism which was the popular form of hatred/discrimination/marginalization at the time in Europe and other parts of the West and how Canada even when it was on the side of the allies and people were fleeing Nazi persecution Canada refused to gave asylum to European Jews and others. Again we talk about Canada and even much of the West's support for Japanese expansionism and its horrific treatment of its colonial subjects in China, Korea, and much of Asia and how Anti-communism and fear of the rise of communist societies trumped the hideous ideology and truces would be quickly made with those Axis forces and their collaborators to quash rising socialist reformists and communist movements in Asia, Greece, Italy, and so fourth. The final question/discussion I have with Tyler is "So with all that hidden/suppressed and barely taught history of Spanish Civil War, World War II and Canada ok when the British declared war on Germany followed by its invasion of Poland, Canada was on the right side of history. But do you think World War II often marketed and taught of as a “good war” is cynically used to justify more imperialism in the world, and talk about how it is if you agree with that, and overall much of humanity has done a disservice to those who’ve perished in World War II, the soldiers killed and the victims of the crimes of the Nazis and Japanese given…how Israel was created, and the countless murderous far-right juntas many of them with links to Nazi such as in Greece, or South Korea, much of Latin America, and the US and Canada and its other allies harboring countless Eastern European and other Nazis all in the name of the true religion of these capitalist/imperialists which is Anti-communism and much leftism with the Cold War? is it long overdue that we need to move beyond World War II and what I mean is how we can teach World War II that does the truth justice and help us understand how the world system functions? all of this and plenty more in this edition of 1@Yourismouter 1+1 , all things Canada, all things Spanish Civil War and World War II for you history buff, and do enjoy, please share widely, leave comments, and rest in peace to those who perished in the Holocaust in Europe and Asia and those Spaniards and their comrades outside who were the first to truly give their lives resisting fascism and that includes those resisting Japan.
