How did these three singers get on the same plane? And what led to the tragic plane crash? Buddy Holly and his bandmates were playing at a winter concert in Milwaukee. His bandmates couldn’t handle the fierce cold. Buddy’s drummer Carl Brunch suffered frostbite and missed a performance! As such, Buddy decided they should fly to their next destination rather than drive. Ritchie Valens, who was only 17, was another passenger on the plane. Apparently, Dion and his bandmates, The Belmonts, gave up their seat on the plane. This left only Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson, and Tommy Allsup – who was Buddy’s lead guitarist. But Ritchie Valens really wanted to fly on the plane and beat Tommy through a coin toss to secure his seat. J.P. Richardson only got his seat because Waylon Jennings gave it up. This flight seemed like it would have been great. After all, it was three living rock and roll legends on the same flight. However, the flight took off during a snowstorm. The conditions were poor, and the plane eventually crashed. This horrific incident still haunts music fans to this day.
