While President Donald Trump has tried to distance himself from convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, his name and image have appeared repeatedly in records released this year from Epstein’s estate. New photos and documents in recent weeks have offered some glimpses of their relationship, which has come under renewed scrutiny in the push for the government to release the information it has about the Epstein investigation. Trump and Epstein were at one point friends. Trump traveled on the disgraced financier’s jet at least eight times in the 1990s, at one point calling Epstein a “terrific guy.” But, the two had a falling out in the early 2000s. Trump has never been accused of any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein’s yearslong sex trafficking scheme. As a candidate, Trump called for the release of the Epstein files. As president, he characterized the push for transparency as a “democrat hoax.” In late November, he signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act, a bill from Congress that requires the Department of Justice to make public all materials related to its investigation.
