...The Omni International Hotel Opened Its Doors to Luxury Billed as "Miami's first megastructure," the Omni was a shopping mall with a hotel on top. Much of the mall was already open when Ike Seamans covered the opening of the Omni International Hotel for WTVJ News. Seamans found 556 rooms in the twenty-story hotel, capped by the Omni suite, which came with a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce. One of the hotel's restaurants opened with the hotel. Another eatery -- and a disco -- were coming soon. The Omni International flaunted a very 1970s kind of luxury, with a cool million spent on plants placed throughout the premises; the yearly bill for maintaining the greenery was estimated at $48,000. For all that, the Omni International opened to strong business and was fully sold for October, with 132 conventions on the horizon. But as with all things Omni, the hotel's future was prone to upsets. In the 1990s it was re-branded as a Crowne Plaza Hotel; in time the Wyndham, Marriott and Radisson chains operated it. Today it's a Hilton.
